In this crit at the Shaun Project Space I loved the work by Emma, it was a huge change from her last project containing realistic and beautiful portrait paintings. This project Emma has tried something new and is bringing up a controversial topic whilst doing so, the work contains figurative line drawings of the nude body in everyday poses and obscure poses, with certain parts of the body exaggerated, very much like a caricature. When observing the work, everyone was quick to say that it is clearly sexual and contains erotic natures from looking at the nude body in different poses with people from the opposite sex and with genitals being exaggerated. However, by doing so we all just proved the question the Emma is raising about her work to be both true and controversial; Emma asked why is it as soon as you take the clothing off a body in this context becomes sexual but not in the context of a nude model in life drawing for example, questioning why nudity is okay and not okay in certain contexts and why it is seen as sexual in certain contexts. In my opinion art should question peoples ideas and create conversation, and by this work doing so it really stood out to me.
