Artist: Viktor & Rolf
Dutch fashion designers Viktor & Rolf recently took broken picture frames and turned them into a wearable gown by draping them over models at their catwalk show. The pictures painted on the canvas all had a Victorian feel to them, with classic portraits distorted and broken apart giving them a great look, bringing together classic and modern, and contrasting the old and the new. The Gowns created by the Dutch duo also carried out the Victorian vibe clashing the the modern, contemporary style with their take on a modern version of a Ruff, created by using the canvas frames around the neck, this gives the whole look a great affect as it is all consistent with each other. However, the main feature that caught my eye was the canvas' that were hung up on the wall complimenting the catwalk, as soon as i seen it I had so many ideas with ways i could use this technique. the main three canvas' containing distorted Victorian artwork were all draping out of the frame and connecting with each other, I thought it looked like the paintings were being sucked in a certain direction with the canvas showing the motion by draping out of the frame, and the actual painting complementing this motion by distorting in the same direction. I love the look this gives a regular tradition canvas as it gives it body and movement as if it were actualy being sucked away, I am going to explore this technique and expand on it as it really fascinates me.
